Sermon Notes

The Sermon on the Mount – 9. On Lying
Matthew 5:33-37

“A lie is an abomination unto the Lord… and a very present help in time of trouble.”

Background
But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all… All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ (Matthew 5:34, 37)
• Oaths were common ancient world. Israel was taught to make oaths in the name of the one true God.
“Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.” (Deuteronomy 6:13)
• In Jesus’ day, a devout Jewish person would refrain from using the name of God. They would substitute and make their oath by heaven or by Jerusalem, but it’s the same idea.

Jesus Teaching on Lying
• Jesus goes to the heart of the problem with the oath system. The problem is we don’t tell the truth.
Then we end up using pressure, guilt, or a song and dance to impress other people with our sincerity.
• Life in the Kingdom means I honor you with the truth because you are one of God’s precious
creations. I don’t try to pressure you. I don’t deceive you. I don’t manipulate you. It’s just simply, “Yes” or “No.”
You can tell somebody the truth without loving them, but you cannot love somebody without telling them the truth.
• I honor your capacity to decide because I love you more than I want to get my way. I’ve surrendered my way, my will, to God’s kingdom, God’s will. “Your kingdom come Lord”
