The Parable of the Prodigal Son

• Kenneth Bailey, expert on Middle Eastern culture, says he has never read anything that acts as a cultural bomb the way this story does.
• In the biblical world, inheritance comes only after the father dies. What the son is really saying is: "Dad, I wish you would drop dead!"
• Wealth, in the ancient world, is land. To give the son his inheritance would mean selling off the family's portion of "the promised land."
• The father, scandalously, hikes up his robes and runs to the gate to get to his son before the townspeople do to prevent them from shaming him in the act of gesasah.

The challenge of the parable
• What triggers the response of the parable: Did the son undo his sins? Did he repay for the lost land? Did he repair the humiliation his actions brought to his family?
No! All he did was turn his steps homeward.

Amazing Grace
• This is grace... Regardless of my foolish choices, God the Father looks for me to turn my steps homeward.

Let us have confidence, then, and approach God's throne, where there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it. (Hebrews 4:16)
